Leur signification pour l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque est myst\u00e9rieuse : d\u00e9esses de la fertilit\u00e9 ou de l&rsquo;abondance, symbolisation de la beaut\u00e9 pour une humanit\u00e9 qui mangeait rarement \u00e0 sa faim, repr\u00e9sentation de chefs de clan de soci\u00e9t\u00e9s matriarcales&nbsp;?. Le myst\u00e8re est entier. Les scientifiques sont d&rsquo;accord pour penser que ces repr\u00e9sentations ne refl\u00e8tent pas une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 physique, mais ont sans doute un sens magique pour les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque.
